Mokthar Gania

Undisputed master of Guembri (the archaic bass with three strings which is the instrument-king of Gnaoua), hence its title of Maâlem, and endowed with a very beautiful voice, MokhtarGania comes from the most famous line of Gnaoua of Essaouira. He is the younger brother of the late Maâlem Mahmoud Gania, who has been an exceptional musician – a “phenomenon”. Mokhtar is the same.His encounters with Pharoah Sanders, Bill Laswell, Carlos, Santana, Peter Grossman, Adam Rudolph, SussanDeyhim, etc. have set in Mokhtar the desire to create a new music; a fusion of African rooth, blues, soul, harmonic arrangements, throbbing melodies and Arian choruses, that convey to a very wide audience the Gnawa’s “cosmic” groove.  The Africa Experience group was formed: besides Mokhtar Gania, guembri and lead voice, Anoir Ben Brahim, acoustic and electric guitars, his core is composed of musicians based or staying, for the most part, in Essaouira.
